Orange Bitter (Citrus aurantium)

Bitter orange essential oil has the sweet, citrus smell that is characteristic of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), but with an underlying touch of tart bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit oil. Is often used in the treatment of heartburn, flatulence, and diarrhea and in cellulite reducing formulas. Seems to aid in the absorption of vitamin C. Many parts of this plant, Citrus aurantium, are extracted for use as essential oils. Bitter orange essential oil is made from the fruit, bergamot is extracted from the peel, pettigrain is extracted from the foliage and twigs, and neroli is distilled from the blossoms.
