Making Handmade Lye and Glycerin Soap
Location: Parley's Hardware, upstairs kitchen - 260 South 1200 West in Orem (just off the Center Street exit and just south of Trafalga Family Fun Center) Date: Wednesday, December 9th Time: 5:00 pm Instructor: Jenni Johnson Price: Free Jenni will demonstrate a convenient method of making lye soap, called “Hot Process,” using a crock pot to bring the required ingredients to “saponification” (where vegetable based oils and lye combine in a chemical process to make soap). The lye is “cooked out” during this process so that you don't need to wait several weeks for the soap to cure before using it. Even though this is a thoroughly modern way to make lye soap, you could use the same principles in hard times to make soap from lye (leached from ash) and animal tallow. The class will also cover the addition of natural colorants, essential oils, herbs and other additives to handmade soap. Just for fun, you will see how glycerin melt-and-pour soap is made and learn how to add your own special touches to make exciting creations. Preserve the Knowledge of Soapmaking! Please tell your friends about this class. Jenni Johnson's bio:
